USGS CHARLES RIVER AT WALTHAM, MA. Daily Data: Discharge, cubic feet per second: Daily Statistics Record for this site is maintained by the USGS Massachusetts Water Science Center. Each summer, CRWA also provides a daily public notification of water quality forecasts in the Charles River using an online, real-time notification system. CRWA science staff monitor the results of our Blue Cities demonstration projects to determine the impact on the health of the Charles River. Population(s) Served. General/Unspecified. Budget.

Lower Charles River MIKE 21 Model MIKE 21 is a two-dimensional flow and water quality model developed and marketed by the Danish Hydraulic Institute. A two-dimensional model was considered necessary to resolve the lateral variations in water quality than can be expected from shoreline discharges with little momentum.   The Charles River was given a "B" level grade from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regarding bacterial water quality for the Charles River .

As background to the development of River Water Quality Model No.1, the Task Group completed a critical evaluation of the current state of the practice in water quality modelling. A major limitation in model formulation is the continued reliance on BOD as the primary state variable, despite the fact BOD does not include all biodegradable matter. The survey of the shore line of a river is made by running a theodolite and tape traverse on a shore at a convenient distance form the edge of the water. If the river is narrow, a single theodolite and tape traverse is on one bank and both banks. Located by staid or plane table methods. If the river is wide, it is necessary to run traverses on both banks and locate each shore.

Measurements indicated a salt water influence up stream ofthe New Charles River Dam to the Harvard Boat Club, which is located just downstream from the Eloit Bridge. The area is separated from the Boston Harbor by the new Charles River Dam, although salt water intrusion occurs through the Dam's boat locks.

Toxic Algal Bloom, Lake Eire, (Credit: NASA) The green scum shown in this image is the worst algal bloom Lake Erie has experienced in decades. Such blooms were common in the lake’s shallow western basin in the s and 60s. Phosphorus from farms, sewage, and industry fertilized the waters so that huge algae blooms developed year after year.

The Nation's rivers and streams are a priceless resource, but pollution from urban and agricultural areas pose a threat to our water quality. To understand the value of water quality, and to more effectively manage and protect the Nation's water resources, it's critical that we know the current status of water-quality conditions, and how and why those conditions have been changing over time.

The James River runs through the heart of Virginia. Its water and shores have been witness to hundreds of years of history. Both before and after the establishment of the English colony of Jamestown on its banks, the James River has played a central and defining role in the development of Virginia.
